What is the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is an Australian Government initiative for people with a disability. The scheme is run by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA). The NDIS will become available in Rockhampton, Gladstone and west to the borders from 1 January 2018. The NDIS supports people aged between 0-65 years with a permanent and significant disability that affects their ability to take part in everyday activities.
The NDIS provides funding to participants to purchase a range of supports aimed at increasing their independence, inclusion and social and economic participation. Participants will be supported to think about goals across different areas of their life, including daily living, home, health and well-being, lifelong learning, work, social and community participation, relationships, choice and control.
The NDIS gives more choice and control over how, when and where supports are provided, and gives individuals certainty that they will receive the support they need over their lifetime. It also focuses on early intervention, where getting support early can reduce the impact of disability on individuals or their children.
What Access Recreation is doing to prepare for the NDIS
In preparation for the NDIS, we are undertaking a number of “getting prepared” activities. The individuals we support and their families are at the forefront of preparations, with regular provision of information, updates, and promotion of opportunities to learn about the NDIS. On the business side of preparation, activities are focussing on maintaining our quality services, staffing and systems development. In addition to the 1:1 individual support we provide, we have recently introduced a new service – Free to Be Me – a new group based service model that focusses on social participation and life-long learning. New business systems are currently under development that will streamline internal human resource and information management processes. We are also looking at ways to make an individual’s experience using Access Recreation’s services as easy and efficient as possible.
